Absolutely! Most current social networks are driven by engagement, which brings out the worst in us. https://www.humanetech.com/ does a good job of highlighting these issues and proposing solutions.

Unfortunately a big part of that dynamic is baked into those social networks being profit-driven companies driven by advertising. I don't think https://joinmastodon.org/ is the ultimate answer, but its federated, protocol-driven nature is a promising step.

Robin Sloan makes compelling argument for this moment being a great time to start new experiments in social media: https://www.robinsloan.com/lab/new-avenues/ I love his exhortation that these experiments should be small and funky (and plentiful) in contrast to the current social media behemoths.

The key facilities I'm thinking of these days are context and convergence. What can we do to (re)connect information with its context(s) to bring deeper understanding? And what can we do to help people from different "sides" find ways to converge on their common ground?
